“Tantilizingly close.”
This summer the President & CEO here at the Alliance for Aging Research, Dan Perry, was asked to participate in the annual melding of the foremost medical minds known as TEDMED. At the meeting, Dan gave a fantastic 13 minute talk that really summed up how “tantalizingly close” researchers are to that “fountain of youth”. Not the fountain that will create 500 year old grandparents that write you in and out of their wills for every perceived slight, but the one that will extend everyone’s healthy years of living, or “Healthspan”, well into their 80’s & 90’s without the multiplicity of tragic and devastating chronic conditions that compound to slowly rob them of their mental and physical well-being.
The fountain Dan describes is much more realistic, one that actually slows the devastating effects of the aging process that directly contribute to the development of those costly chronic conditions. His talk about extending the Healthspan and its potential boon to society, was actually quite inspirational. He describes his entry into this seemingly far-fetched field early in his professional life, and the almost mythical scientific developments, and the people who helped them come about, during his 25 year journey. The talk is really worth watching, including the Q & A session where he gets to really plug for the current generation of scientists and academics pushing to make this the public priority it deserves to be.

RESEARCH AMERICA'S SPECIAL MEDICAL STIMULATION PROGRAM
Two trillion six hundred billion dollars is presently spent yearly in the United States for health care. That amounts to about $8700 for every man woman and child. For a family of four it costs $32,800. That is more money than tens of millions of families earn in a year, especially after taxes. By 2029 there will be more than 70,000,000 people over the age of 70 and more than 80,000,000 who are at least 65 years of age. They will need medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and Veterans Administration benefits.
According to the non partisan Congressional Budget Office the cost of medical care will go up to 25% of the Gross Domestic Product by 2025.That is only 13 years from now. This will bring the cost of medical care to over $50,000 for a family of four. By 2050 the cost will be 49% of the gross domestic product. That would amount to more than $90,000 for a family of four.That's crazy but unfortunately true. A check of the non partisan Congressional Budget will show this to be so. (The economy is expected to grow about 3% annually so the figures given above will be much higher.)
The remedy many give is to ration care for all. Our solution should be to find cures for the illnesses so that we don't need so much medical care. That can only be done with increased medical research. American scientists, research physicians and engineers are exceptional. If we fund them appropriately they will find cures and preventions. It will help us and be our gift to the world.
The government spends about $45,000,000,000 yearly more for military research than they spend for medical research. This should be mentioned but we should not be hostile and demand that the budget be cut only that the medical research budget be raised. It will help raise the peoples ideas as to the amount of money that should be increased for the NIH.
The cost of health care is making us uncompetitive in the international trade market and usurping our wealth in the United States. It is killing our job creating ability. But most important we will have a healthier nation and a healthier world.
No matter how much health care the American people get with the present technology there will still be large numbers of deaths yearly. That is because the state of the art isn't capable of saving the lives of large numbers of Americans. We need more progress.
More than 50% of the personal bankruptcies in the United States are brought about because of medical expenses. Many are impoverished and suffer from near bankruptcy.
The statistics listed below are heartbreaking. Most of the dead got good medical care but it wasn't adequate. Even billionaires aren't exempt from the ravages of untreatable medical conditions that kill almost everybody. Warren Buffet's wife died of breast cancer. He couldn't save her with vast medical expenditures. Steve Jobs also died of cancer and his vast expenditures to save himself were useless. There are large numbers of other wealthy people who have the same experience. We still have a long way to go to improve medical care.
The statistics listed below show the result of the present state of our medical care. The patients usually received good medical care but it wasn't adequate. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention the following were the eight major yearly killers of Americans.
Heart Diseases: 616,067
Cancer: 562,875
Stroke: 135, 875
Chronic lower respiratory disease: 127,924
Diabetes: 71,632
Influenza and Pneumonia: 52,717
Nephritis, Nephritic syndrome and nephrosis: 46, 448
Septicemia: 34,828

In addition to the above statistics yearly over 700,000 people die of other causes which can usually be remedied. The United States has 1,300,000 legally blind people, 5,600,000 are paralyzed and according to the National Institute of Mental Health more than ten million American adults suffer from severe mental illness.
Every two days 9,203 people die of eight illnesses. (we are not counting the "minor" illnesses.) That is 2, 923 more Americans than died in combat in ten years in Iraq and Afghanistan combined. In one year 1,679,632 died of the above diseases. In five years 8,398,160 people are presently scheduled to die of the above eight diseases. In twenty years about 33,398,160 Americans are expected to die of the top eight killing diseases.
Every day that we postpone doing the research we risk the lives of United States citizens.
American deaths from some recent wars are as follows. World War One - 116,708. World War Two - 407,316, Korean War – 36,516, Vietnam War 58,209 Iraq War - 4,477 and the Afghanistan War - 1,803. That is the total of our soldiers deaths and they are entitled to the highest honors.
Every three months more Americans die of what doctors cannot cure in our country than died in the 23 years of wars of the twentieth and twenty first centuries. All 20th and 21st century wars over a 28 year period killed 520,000 Americans. Every 3 months about 605,750 die, usually of untreatable illnesses. Total yearly American deaths are 2,423,000. This death figure is just accepted as 'natural" in our country. We should let them know that the times can be "a changing".
About 5% of the people are responsible for 50% of the health care spending. In 2009 That amounts to about $80,000 a year per person. Because of their disability some need welfare, Medicaid, Medicare, Food Stamps VA benefits, home care services and transportation, sometimes needing ambulance or ambullet transportation.. That exacerbates the costs.1% of the people use 21.8 of health care expenditures. That amounts to about $1,300,000,000 or about $170,000 per person. Because of their conditions many also need Welfare, Medicare, Medicaid, Food Stamps, VA benefits, home care services and transportation. That makes the cost even higher. With increases in the aging population the costs will increase even further.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) funds most government medical research. Scientists, engineers and physicians make applications for research funding. The applicants usually have Ph.D.'s, MD or MD and PhD degrees. In addition they usually have years of research training experience, The applicants spend months writing up research proposals, they have the training to do the research and have the laboratories in order to do research. The applicants are ready to start working in order to solve America's health problems. Why not make medical research part of the economic stimulus? The 'boots" are already on the ground.
The researchers work in organizations such as Harvard University, MIT, Stanford University, John Hopkins University, Columbia University, the Rockefeller University and other outstanding institutions.
A few years ago the NIH gave numbers to about 80% of the research applicants indicating that they were worthy of funding. At its height about 30% were funded. Today about 20% of the applicants are funded. At least 50% should be funded.The NIH doesn't always fund the very best research. There is a quota given for young applicants. That is because most successful applicants have to wait until they are in their late thirties or early forties to receive funding. Many left the field in disgust. The average NIH researcher is 42 years old before getting funded. They try to give hope to younger applicants. They also fund rare disease research even if it isn't the best research available as they must show that they are not neglecting some diseases.
Our goals are to save lives, overcome disabilities such as blindness, paralysis, mental illness, make healthcare affordable and improve medical conditions so that people can work and not be dependant on the government or their families. They will become tax payers, workers who help enrich the economy and not depend on government services.
This is the first generation that has the potential to overcome the illnesses that plagued humanity for more than 100,000 years. The question is whether we have the will to fight for this potential. Francis Bacon, one of the earliest philosophers of science said, "By far the biggest obstacle to the progress of science lies in this, that men despair and think things impossible".
