Last week, former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor shared personal testimony before the Senate Special Committee on Aging about the burden of Alzheimer’s disease. O’Connor stepped down from the court in 2006 to care for her husband, who has the disease. As many people know, Alzheimer’s is an overwhelming disease-both on a personal level for families and for society.
What can you do to help stop Alzheimer’s?
A Quick Look at Alzheimer’s, a series of four animated ‘pocket’ films, explains the essence of the disease and its public health implications. The short films, which run only two-three minutes each, are available for anyone at anytime, and are universally accessible—playable on iPods, cell phones, PDAs, laptops and DVD players. They are available for download from or as a DVD. Topics covered in the films are: What is Alzheimer’s Disease?, An Urgent Epidemic, The Race to the Cure and A Message for Patients and their Families. The films are designed to help individuals understand and explain the disease in layman’s terms. It is our hope that these films will shine a light on the disease, and that doing so will lead to improved care for patients, greater support for families and an increased sense of urgency to find a cure. We believe that these films can raise awareness and help propel this issue to the forefront of the national agenda. Each and every one of us has a stake in this disease and we can make a difference by increasing understanding about the disease. I agree with the advocate for research. We spend billions on research associated with faster computers, and a range of developments that does little to improve the life style or health of our inhabitants and the plant. Lets start getting it right and work on the things that are important.

I have had an uncle who went through Alzheimer’s, but the person who really went through the ordeal was my aunt. It is such a painful and tedious process to see your loved one behave the way he does and treat you like a stranger. When Alzheimer’s hit the old it is bearable but when it affect people in the prime of their life it is disastrous. I have seen a friend’s mother battling her youth through this.
