Is Alzheimer’s disease contagious? Dozens of headlines ran earlier this month suggesting Alzheimer’s patients potential to infect others, but before quarantining forgetful friends and family, I advise further reading.
Researchers at the University of Texas injected mice with human brain tissue ravaged by Alzheimer’s and as a result the mice began to exhibit changes characteristic of the disease. A fairly palatable study considering the horror belied in the headline and the study may explain the development of Alzheimer’s in individuals free of genetic and behavioral risk factors. The rodents’ response to the beta-amyloid laden brain matter evoked comparison to the infectious processes of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy, better known as Mad Cow disease, and its human counterpart, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). These transmissible disorders result from exposure to blood or tissue contaminated with prions, misshapen proteins that attack and deform the neural tissue of a healthy host leading to amyloid accumulation and neurocognitive decline. CJD infection can result from blood transfusions, organ donations, and surgical equipment as prions are impervious to sterilization processes. This progressive pilot study suggests that Alzheimer’s disease may be transmitted similarly, offering an explanation for the seemingly sporadic development of Alzheimer’s disease.
Undoubtedly, the hypothesis requires further corroboration, but an affirmed comparison of Alzheimer’s to CJD may raise public alarm. The symptoms of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease include dementia, changes in personality, hallucinations, and eventual loss of total function as the brain decomposes; strikingly similar to those of a patient with advanced Alzheimer’s. Yet, while the public regards Alzheimer’s disease with great empathy, CJD carries chilling stigma. This rare disease has captured macabre fascination for decades; CJD, a rumored consequence of cannibalism, traces back to the discovery of flesh eating practices of Papua New Guineans in the 1940s and 1950s. The condition gained the attention of popular culture in 1995 after supernatural drama The X-Files featured CJD in an episode depicting a cannibalistic cult of the south. Eerily, an outbreak of CJD erupted in Kentucky only two years later, prompting further research of neurodegenerative disease among New Guinean tribes in the 21st century. Most regard CJD with horror rather than as a fatal clinical condition, partly due to its rarity. The CDC regards the neurological condition as extremely uncommon, with an estimated one case per million people annually. The risk of contracting CJD is outlandishly low, but if the disease is pathologically similar to Alzheimer’s, it may expose the baffling origin of Alzheimer’s and account for the exponential increase of prevalence in recent decades.

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and sporadic Creutzfeldt Jakob Disease (sCJD) are sister prion diseases, transmissible, infectious by medical equipment, (scopes, etc.) dental and eye equipment, blood, urine, feces, saliva, mucous (think coughs & sneezes) Doctors frequently misdiagnose AD and sCJD one for the other. Invertebrates are a good model for the disease from a biochemical point of view. We are able to delete the genes, the expression levels of very attractive, or improve the expression in a simple model and then observe the effects in a system which can lead to higher species.
