President, Mars Symbioscience
Frank Mars is the President of Mars Symbioscience, one of the six global segments of Mars, Incorporated, and a member of the Board of Directors of Mars, Incorporated. Pioneering some of the most innovative and breakthrough fundamental scientific research, and with sustained funding from Mars, Incorporated, Mars Symbioscience was established in 2005 as an internal technology-based health and life sciences venture area to develop and commercialize new products and services supported by evidence-based science.
To date, Symbioscience has successfully incubated, introduced and transitioned five technology platforms in the areas of food, plant, biomedical and life sciences, including Wisdom Panel®, an ever increasing range of complex canine genetic tests for Breeders, Veterinarians and Consumers (mainly breed identification which now covers over 250 breeds); and, CocoaVia®, a revolutionary new high flavanol cocoa extract-based dietary supplement designed to help support healthy living/aging by promoting circulatory/cardiovascular health.
A third focus area, Marine Sustainability, is still in development and undergoing scientific validation. This includes the development of a low cost method of coral reef rehabilitation, now almost two hectares in size, as well as the establishment of sustainable island based and CITES certified ornamental fish productions systems.
Finally, Mr. Mars is also Co-founder and Chairman of the Board of Heliae® Development, whose mission is to develop disruptive and end-to-end algae technology solutions that sustainably produce new renewable raw material streams from algae with a current focus on high value nutritionals and agro science products.
Prior to working in Mars (1990-1993), Mr. Mars was the CEO of Insulated Shipping Containers, Incorporated (ISC), a specialty bio-pharmaceutical packaging engineering company and Chairman of the Board of ISC from 1993-2001. For the past 26 years, he has held a variety of senior positions within Mars, Incorporated in Electronics, Snack Food, Pet Care and Food segments across the United States, Europe and Asia.
Mr. Mars earned his undergraduate degree in Economics from Yale University in 1985 and his MBA in 1990 from Duke University (Fuqua School of Business).
