It features real people and their family caregivers whose lives were impacted by NIH research. This included people who were diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, heart failure, cancer, stroke, dysautonomia, and hydrocephalus. Some of these diseases may be familiar to you, while others may not. No matter what, conditions like these impact your friends, family, and colleagues every day.
Without the NIH, research into many of these diseases wouldn’t be possible. Since its founding in 1887, the NIH has helped find cures and effective treatments that have increased our lifespan and improved our healthspan. NIH research continues today in exciting new areas such as precision medicine, geroscience, gene editing, and the BRAIN Initiative focused on neurological research.
The video calls on President Obama, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell, and members of Congress to work together to increase funding in support of the valuable work of the NIH.
