Date: August 1st, 2016
August is National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM), an opportunity for us to educate ourselves on the value of vaccinations.
Each year, thousands of Americans are hospitalized or die from vaccine-preventable diseases, and even more are unable to carry out daily tasks while they recover from such illnesses. Even worse, older adults are disproportionately affected by these diseases.
Yet, much of this can be prevented when people get their recommended vaccines.
During NIAM, the Alliance has launched a campaign to remind older adults and their caregivers why vaccinations are so important to their health.
This includes a new “pocket film” called Our Best Shot: The Importance of Vaccines in Older Adults. This animated film explains in an easy-to-understand format why older adults should get their recommended vaccines, while also encouraging their loved ones to do the same. The film gives a detailed look into how vaccines work, addresses the need for vaccination later in life, and encourages open communication with health care professionals.

The Alliance is posting helpful resources on social media using the hashtags #OurBestShot and #NIAM16. We encourage you to participate by sharing this vital information across your own social media platforms.
Coming in September, in partnership with the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (n4a), the Alliance will release a community workshop kit with all the resources needed to conduct educational seminars for seniors and caregivers. We'll also be hosting a webinar and a Twitter chat.
