Saturday is an important day at the Alliance! It’s World Stroke Day – a global campaign to increase awareness on the fight against stroke. This year’s theme is “Face the Facts: Stroke is Treatable,” which highlights how more awareness, access to treatment, and improved quality of care can improve lives.

In the United States, a person dies from stroke every four minutes, and about 30 percent of survivors are permanently disabled.

The impact of strokes can be devastating, which is why the Alliance recently launched the “Celebrating a Year Without a Stroke” campaign. The campaign raises awareness about the risk of stroke from atrial fibrillation through the first-hand accounts of people who know how serious AFib-related strokes can be. We feature stories from a stroke survivor and her husband, an AFib patient who advocates for more awareness, and a cardiologist about the importance of stroke prevention.

The “Celebrating a Year Without a Stroke” website also features valuable resources for patients and their families about the risk of stroke, as well as information for health care professionals. To participate in the campaign, you can download materials here to spread the word about stroke prevention.

If you are interested in learning more about AFib-related stroke, the Alliance has a health resource page for further education and our Silver Book®: Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) contains useful stats on the risk of stroke.

Also, watch this video featuring Sharon and Randall Munson’s story on how a stroke impacted their lives and how they hope their experience can help others.
