It’s time for spring cleaning! You may have reorganized your closets and tidied up your yard, but there’s one area of the home you probably overlooked: your medicine cabinet.

Your medicine cabinet may contain unused prescription drugs that pose a serious threat to yourself and others. To decrease the risks associated with unused prescription drugs, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency leads National Prescription Drug Take Back Day to encourage people to safely dispose of their unused medications and learn about the dangers of misuse.

Unused medications can be particularly harmful to children. Every year, 60,000 children age five and under are treated for accidental medication poisoning. In one-third of those instances, the medication belonged to a grandparent.

If you need to get rid of unused medication, the DEA is teaming up with law enforcement agencies across the nation to give people a place to safely disposal of prescription drugs. You can find your nearest collection site here.

The Alliance has a drug safety page that will allow you to learn more about safe disposal, usage, and storage.

You can also watch this “pocket film” that highlights the importance of safe disposal.
