The Alliance seeks a Vice President of Public Policy to oversee the development and implementation of creative and effective government relations strategies to advance our policy priorities with Congress, federal agencies, the White House, coalition partners and external stakeholders. This position works closely with the Alliance’s President/CEO, Vice President of Health Programs, Vice President of Development, and Vice President of Communications to deploy a cohesive, proactive, and aggressive advocacy strategy. This position directly reports to the President/CEO and manages one staff position, the Public Policy Associate.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Leading the public policy, government relations and advocacy functions of the organization.
- Providing strategic counsel to President/CEO on policy and legislative issues
- Pursuing opportunities to engage external stakeholders and policy influencers to extend the Alliance’s reach
- Advancing the Alliance’s policy priorities by effectively positioning the organization as a leading voice on aging research policy and promoting the Alliance among D.C. thought leaders.
- Cultivating and maintaining strategic relationships among key policy makers and government leaders and representing the Alliance to major stakeholders, including congressional and administration staff, national nonprofit organizations and industry partners.
- Representing the Alliance at governmental and legislative forums, coalition meetings and similar initiatives.
- Serve as a lobbyist for the Alliance, which requires registration as a lobbyist at the federal level.
- Overseeing Alliance-convened coalition programs on FDA clinical development in Alzheimer’s disease and sarcopenia.
- Managing, coaching and mentoring the Public Policy Associate.
- Working closely with the Vice President of Development to ensure robust support for our policy and advocacy work.
- Ensuring collaboration and integration between the Public Policy department with the Health Programs department, Development department, and Communications department.
- Managing the budget for the department and policy projects.
- Leading special projects as needed.
- Willingness to travel 15-25% of the time, including occasional weekends.

- Advanced degree in law, public policy, public health, or another relevant field preferred–or equivalent experience.
- 8-10 years of relevant policy experience at a federal agency; a patient advocacy, voluntary health organization, or trade organization; on Capitol Hill; a lobby firm; or, a corporate government affairs office.
- At least 1 year of supervising one or more staff (not just interns), and at least 2 years of project management experience.
- Robust knowledge of the federal legislative and regulatory processes.
- Established experience working on Medicare, Medicaid, and FDA regulatory and legislative issues.
- Record of successful relationship-building with elected officials and their staff, agency staff, and third party stakeholders.
- Demonstated persuasive advocacy and negotiation skills, excellent judgment, and political instincts.
- Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external partners to achieve results.
- Proven managerial skills with ability to motivate and lead direct-report and cross-functional teams to success and superior results.
- Creativity, enthusiasm, and the willingness to be hands-on are critical to success; must have strong problem solving and negotiating skills.
- Flexibility and openness to new ideas and new approaches, and interest in learning from peers/colleagues.
- Ability to balance multiple competing priorities and balance allocation of time between legislative and regulatory efforts.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Must be authorized to work in the United States.
- Interest in aging-related health issues preferred.
