Alliance for Aging Research to Honor Martha Stewart and Other Notables at 20th Annual Bi-Partisan Congressional Awards Dinner

September 12th, 2013, Washington, D.C. – The Alliance for Aging Research (Alliance) is honoring Martha Stewart—founder of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia and Emmy Award-winning television show host, entrepreneur and bestselling author—along with other notables, at the 20th Annual Awards Dinner on Tuesday, September 17th, 2013 at the Willard InterContinental Hotel in Washington, DC.

Martha Stewart will receive the Alliance’s Silver Innovator Award, presented to an individual who anticipates and embraces the evolution of integrated high quality and cost-effective health care aligned with the needs of older patients. Ms. Stewart was chosen for the groundbreaking services offered at the Martha Stewart Center for Living and for her recent book: Living the Good Long Life: A Practical Guide to Caring for Yourself and Others, which provides practical advice on the challenges that come with caring for aging relatives.

Other notable awardees include:

Senator Jerry Moran (R-KS) will be awarded the Distinguished Public Service Award for his consistent support of medical research at the National Institutes of Health as Ranking Member of the Senate Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee;

Senator Kay Hagan (D-NC) will receive the Claude Pepper Award for Advancing Healthy Aging through Research for her efforts to expedite patient access to novel therapies by providing additional authorities for human drug review to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in her role as member of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor & Pensions;

David Wise, Ph.D., from the JFK School of Government at Harvard University will receive the MetLife Foundation Silver Scholar Award, which honors the work of economists, demographers, and related researchers whose scholarship increases our understanding of the value of healthy life after 65 and continued medical innovations that help people live longer, healthier lives; and

Richard Hodes, M.D., Director of the National Institute on Aging at the National Institutes of Health, will receive the Indispensable Person of the Year Award for his leadership with implementation of the National Plan to Address Alzheimer’s Disease, as well as supporting the creation of an interest group made up of 20 institutes and centers to coordinate discussion and action on age-related research topics across the NIH.
