The Alliance for Aging Research and 52 additional organizations shared a letter with President Biden today urging him to direct the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to reopen the Aβ PET national coverage determination (NCD) for amyloid beta (Aβ) positron emission tomography (PET) for a full reconsideration.
In 2013, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) issued an NCD that limited Medicare coverage for Aβ PET to a single scan per lifetime that occurred within the context of a clinical trial. Since, extensive data on the therapeutic value of Aβ PET has been accumulated.
The organizations also asked the White House to revisit the draft decision under development to ensure that CMS’s proposal is inclusive of the promising new data on disease-modifying therapies for Alzheimer’s disease released during the Clinical Trials on Alzheimer’s Disease conference that occurred November 29 through December 2.
The organizations asked President Biden to stand together with Alzheimer’s patients and families to ensure Medicare beneficiaries can receive needed care.
