Senator Lincoln, Congressman Tauzin to Receive Public Service Awards in Aging Research

U.S. Senator Blanche Lambert Lincoln (D-AR) and House Commerce Committee Chairman W.J. “Billy” Tauzin (R-LA) will be saluted tonight for their support of medical research towards healthier aging at the 9th annual Alliance for Aging Research Bipartisan Congressional Awards Dinner at the Four Seasons Hotel in Washington, DC.

“This event is unique because it recognizes our nation’s leaders who are committed to research into aging,” said Daniel Perry, executive director of the Alliance for Aging Research. “Research that increases our understanding of the aging process is important because it brings us closer to finding cures for many diseases and conditions that threaten growing numbers of older Americans.”

As a member of the Senate Special Committee on Aging and the Senate Finance Subcommittee on Health, Senator Lincoln is an ardent advocate for healthy, independent living for all aging Americans. Senator Lincoln was a co-sponsor of the Nurse Reinvestment Act that the President signed into law last month. The act increases career opportunities in nursing and authorizes grants to develop and support gerontology studies. She also helped ensure the reauthorization of the Older Americans Act, which provides an extensive range of social services and nutrition programs for older men and women. In addition, Senator Lincoln has introduced geriatric care legislation, which would expand Medicare coverage for medical residents in geriatrics and care coordination assessment services for the elderly.

As Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, Rep. Tauzin is a steadfast supporter of research and innovation, a crusader for NIH funding, and a champion for older Americans. He is committed to prevention in medical care and has co-sponsored legislation that would provide education and preventive services to aid in the early detection of colorectal cancer, as part of the Screen for Life Campaign. Rep. Tauzin is a strong advocate for expanding preventive health services as part of modernizing Medicare. Rep. Tauzin has urged that research dollars at the NIH are used wisely towards scientific innovation and discovery, which will lead to future treatments and cures benefiting all Americans. “Both Senator Lincoln and Representative Tauzin have championed a healthier America and they truly care about the aging population of this country,” stated Perry. “This year’s annual dinner will bring together leaders from Congress, government agencies, and private foundations and industry, scientists and researchers to celebrate the leadership qualities and dedication of Senator Lincoln and Chairman Tauzin.”
