This Week Is National Poison Prevention Week

March 17, 2015   |   Alliance for Aging Research Team   |   Prevention, Medication Safety

This week we recognize National Poison Prevention Week. This is an opportunity to raise awareness about the danger that poisonings create to people of all ages and to help prevent accidental poisonings.

There are many chemicals and medicines that pose a hazard if we neglect to take appropriate safety precautions. This is especially true with children. Each year approximately 60,000 children end up in emergency departments because they got into medicines while their parent or caregiver was not looking.

During this week, we want to remind all parents, grandparents, and caregivers to make sure to keep all medicines and vitamins stored Up and Away and Out of Sight from children. We’ll be posting educational messages on Twitter, along with many other organizations, using #NPPW. We also invite you to check out the infographic below filled with stats and tips on safe medication storage. Finally, remember to program the National Poison Help Number into your phone: 800.222.1222.
