The Alliance for Aging Research Reflects on a Remarkable Year of Advocacy

December 20, 2024   |   Matthew Thompson   |   Patient Advocacy, Blog, Alliance Initiatives

Just yesterday, it seemed we at the Alliance were setting our 2024 resolutions, refining our mission, and charting a course for an impactful year of advocacy. Now, as the year draws to a close, we proudly reflect on the achievements, lessons, and experiences that have made it truly unforgettable.

From empowering more than 120 organizations around the world to raise awareness of heart valve disease, to demanding policy changes that encourage equitable access to critical Alzheimer’s care, we’ve been hard at work supporting our most vulnerable communities.

Here are a few of our favorite moments from 2024:

Senator Mazie K. Hirono (D-HI) accepts her award from Tom Spulak.

“Hope, Resilience, and Healthy Aging” was the theme of this year’s Annual Awards Dinner, drawing nearly 300 policymakers, patient advocates, industry partners, researchers, health education experts, and more to honor five individuals who have made it their life’s purpose to improve the lives of older adults.

Thank you again to our sponsors and supportershonorees, and panelists. Stay tuned for details on next year’s Heroes in Health celebration, set for September 30, 2025!

This year, we urged the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to expand access to life-saving treatments for Medicare beneficiaries, joining forces with dozens of allies to advance patient equity. A poll conducted by the Alliance and the Partnership to Fight Chronic Diseases revealed bipartisan voter support for Medicare coverage of FDA-approved early Alzheimer’s treatments.

In partnership with Manatt Health, we examined the Inflation Reduction Act’s impact on formularies and utilization management. Additionally, we collaborated with Milliman to create the Standard of Living Valuation (SoLV), an equitable, patient-focused alternative to the Quality Adjusted Life Year (QALY) that incorporates real-world evidence.

This year, we received two Telly Awards for our educational videos. Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV): Not Just a Little Kids’ Virus and Shingles: What You Need to Know to Avoid a World of Pain, produced in 2023, were each awarded a Silver Telly. This is the 8th year the Alliance has been awarded a Telly for our impactful films.

As we continue to fight for the universal human right to healthy aging in the New Year, we at the Alliance are grateful for such a passionate Board of Directors, staff, and an ever-expanding network of allies to help amplify our mission. See you next year!
