For more than 10 years, the Alliance-led Aging in Motion (AIM) Coalition has brought together a diverse group of patient, caregiver, health, and aging groups. The Coalition of groups has worked together to press for greater levels of research and innovation to develop treatments, overcome obstacles that impede development of new treatments, raise awareness about sarcopenia and its impact on the community, and advance consensus among clinicians and regulators on measures and outcomes to determine efficacy of potential new therapies. Highlights of this important work includes:
- Serving on the Steering Committee of the Global Leadership Initiative on Sarcopenia—an initiative aimed at producing an inclusive definition of sarcopenia;
- Leading a survey of clinicians that revealed less than 20% of internists and family medicine physicians report being very familiar with sarcopenia—full findings are available in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society;
- Hosting regular convenings of leading sarcopenia experts at the International Conference on Sarcopenia & Frailty Research (ICSFR) conference;
- Submitting comments to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration on their Patient-Focused Drug Development Initiative;
- Establishing and ICD-10 code for sarcopenia; and
- Much more—detailed on the Alliance website.
In recent years, the primary goal of AIM has shifted to education and awareness, while continuing to stay involved in the efforts to forge consensus and advance treatment options. And now AIM has a new home! You can find all of our content at www.agingresearch.org/AginginMotion. The new pages still feature all of our great educational resources including our educational film Sarcopenia: Taking Charge of Your Muscle Health and our Sarcopenia: Facts & Figures document. Plus the recordings, reports, and work from AIM’s years as a coalition are also available on our new pages.
