Alliance for Aging Research Honors Heroes in Health at 24th Annual Bipartisan Congressional Awards Dinner

Washington, D.C., September 26, 2017 – Today, the Alliance for Aging Research honors Senator Tom Carper (DE), Senator Shelley Moore Capito (WV), Nobel Prize-winning scientist Elizabeth Blackburn, Ph.D., University of California, Elissa Epel, Ph.D, University of California, San Francisco, and former United States Congressman Tony Coelho at its 24th Annual Bipartisan Congressional Awards Dinner at the Willard InterContinental Hotel in Washington, D.C.

“We’re excited to honor those who work to advance aging research,” says Susan Peschin, MHS, Alliance president and CEO. “Tonight, we’re celebrating heroes in health who have made significant accomplishments in medical research and public policy. Their outstanding efforts help to improve the health and quality of life for all of us as we age.”

  • Capito is the recipient of the Distinguished Public Service Award. She has worked across party lines to provide aid to older adults in West Virginia to ensure they have access to Social Security and Medicare.
  • Carper receives the Claude Pepper Award for Advancing Healthy Aging for his efforts to improve the health care system through lowering costs and equipping citizens with the necessary tools to lead healthy lives.
  • Blackburn and Epel are co-recipients of the Silver Innovator Award for their groundbreaking book, The Telomere Effect: A Revolutionary Approach to Living Younger, Healthier, Longer. The book takes a closer look at the role telomerase and telomeres play in the aging process, as well as how longevity is affected by lifestyle habits.
  • Coelho is the recipient of the year’s Daniel Perry Founder’s Award. He was the original author of the Americans with Disabilities Act and has spent his career advocating for disabled rights.
