New Films Highlight Real Stories
of Vaccine-Preventable Diseases
Vaccines are critical in protecting the health of yourself and your community, and are our best line of defense against many infectious diseases. They help your body recognize and fight germs by protecting you each time you come into contact with someone who is sick.
In an effort to encourage older adults to receive all of their vaccinations, the Alliance for Aging Research has created a series of films that feature adults sharing their experiences with Pneumonia, Pertussis, and Shingles.
Alliance Urges HHS to Address Discrimination in Medical Care
and Value Assessment
The Alliance was joined by 44 organizations in asking the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to strengthen protections against discrimination in healthcare decision making and in value assessment.
The letter was submitted in response to proposed regulation from the HHS Office of Civil Rights (OCR) that updates, clarifies, and strengthens the implementing regulation for Section 504 of the Rehabilitation
Act of 1973.
Alliance: Stop Conflating Staffing Issues with Inappropriate Use of Antipsychotics
Alliance President and CEO Sue Peschin, MHS, recently provided comments demanding the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) take immediate action to "fix the agency’s outdated antipsychotic quality measure, which creates incentives for misdiagnosis and prevents patient-centered care grounded in clinical standards."
These comments were made during the Advisory Council on Alzheimer’s Research, Care, and Services meeting on implementation of the National Alzheimer’s Project Act (NAPA).
New Video: Discriminatory Metrics Have No Place in Healthcare
The Alliance released an educational film warning against discriminatory drug pricing metrics promoted by the Institute for Clinical and Economic Review (ICER).
ICER’s Value Assessments Harm Access for Protected Populations – What You Need to Knowdetails the Quality Adjusted Life Year (QALY) and the Equal Value Life Years Gained (evLYG, or evLY), two drug pricing metrics that have been found to place more value on treatments for younger, healthier patients, while limiting access to care for older or disabled patients.
