Alliance to USPSTF: Prioritize Patient Outcomes When Considering Interventions to Address Obesity

Published June 14, 2023

The Alliance provided feedback on the United States Preventative Services Task Force’s (USPSTF) Draft Research Plan for Weight Loss Interventions. The USPSTF is reviewing their recommendations for weight loss strategies for the first time since 2018. The letter emphasizes the need to prioritize patient outcomes and preferences in order to accurately assess the effectiveness and value of weight loss interventions and called attention to anti-obesity medications (AOMs) as a supplement to behavioral interventions.

Obesity is a leading cause of death in the U.S., making preventative treatments crucial. However, AOM coverage by insurance plans is limited, especially for older adults who have a higher prevalence of obesity.

The Alliance noted a recent change in scientific thinking that sees obesity as a chronic condition, and recommended a holistic approach to weight management, including short-term weight reduction and long-term strategies. The Alliance responded to key questions by the USPSTF, providing suggestions to help ensure that patients are at the center of their work.

We look forward to the USPSTF’s updated recommendations that will improve the health and well-being of individuals struggling with obesity.
