Bruce Garren Succeeds Scott as Vice Chair

Washington, D.C., October 5, 2017 – The nonprofit Alliance for Aging Research (Alliance) announces James “Jim” G. Scott as the new chair of its Board of Directors.

Jim Scott

Scott serves as president and CEO of Applied Policy and has been a member of the Washington, D.C., health policy community for almost 20 years. Before founding Applied Policy, he was senior advisor for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Applied Policy helps private sector and nonprofit organizations navigate legislative changes, CMS regulations and influence health policy to improve lives. He has been on the Alliance’s Board of Directors since 2011 and served as its vice chair since 2016. He succeeds James E. Eden, Ed.D., who will remain on the Alliance’s board.

“This is an especially opportune time to lead the Alliance board as we continue our critical focus to not only help people live longer, but better,” says Scott. “We can do this by working with Medicare to ensure that it applies the research and innovations coming from the National Institutes of Health and Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to help us all lead longer, healthier lives.”

The Alliance has also named Bruce Garren as the new vice chair of its Board of Directors. Garren currently serves as a health policy consultant. At the time of his retirement from the private sector in 2013, he was corporate vice president, Public Affairs, and special counsel for Edwards Lifesciences. He has been a member of the Alliance’s board since 2012 and most recently served as Governance Committee chair.

“The Alliance is a strong and highly effective member of the Washington health policy community, and it’s an honor to be named to a leadership position on its board,” says Garren.

Both Scott and Garren assume their roles effective immediately.

“It has been a privilege to serve as chair these past two years, and I know the good work the Alliance is doing will continue as Jim and Bruce take leadership of the Board of Directors,” says Eden. “I look forward to working with them and the rest of the board.”

“We are delighted to announce Jim Scott as our new chair and Bruce Garren as our new vice chair,” says Alliance President and CEO Susan Peschin, MHS. “Both Jim and Bruce have served with distinction as strategic thought partners for the Alliance. I look forward to working with them as they lead the board and propel it to be as effective as it can be. I thank Jim Eden for his exceptional service as our chair these past two years and for his continued support and guidance as a member of our board.”
