New Silver Book Website: Now Easier to Access the Latest Facts on Chronic Disease

June 26th, 2013 – The Alliance for Aging Research is excited to announce the launch of the newly re-designed www.silverbook.org, which brings 1,000s of facts and statistics from more than 600 sources, into one easy-to-use website. The new site continues to offer free access to the same unique database that features the latest information on the burden of chronic disease and the value of innovation in reducing that burden; but now with advanced search features, better navigability, and a more modern design.
Medical Research: The Prescription for an Aging Nation
Every day, 10,000 Americans celebrate their 65th birthday. While the U.S. is experiencing a longevity revolution, it is also on the cusp of a Silver Tsunami of chronic age-related diseases that will bring increased national health care spending, high rates of morbidity and mortality, and declines in quality of life.
Close to half of Americans have chronic conditions and 1 in 4 have more than one. They cause 7 out of every 10 deaths and cost our country 75 cents of every health care dollar spent. With the leading edge of the Baby Boomers now entering Medicare rolls, and chronic disease prevalence growing at a faster rate than the population, the rising tide of disease and disability threatens to cripple our economy.
With continuing talks of extensive budget cuts to discretionary spending in order to control the national debt, policymakers are not surprisingly searching for ways to curb the growth of health spending. Robust medical research offers a way as innovation fosters access to new medical discoveries and helps reduce health care costs. Medical research is fundamental to our nation’s health and economic prosperity. Seeking to reduce the cost of care without investing in research is sure to only make the problem worse.
A Trusted and Powerful Resource
In order to promote national policies that turn to investments in research and innovation, rather than short-term cost cutting and health care rationing, the not-for-profit Alliance for Aging Research publishes The Silver Book®: Chronic Disease and Medical Innovation in an Aging Nation, and promotes it widely with federal and state governments, local health departments, universities, health advocates, and more.
Now in its 8th year and with 10 volumes already in its catalogue, The Silver Book® has become a trusted resource for policymakers, thought leaders, and health advocates across the nation. It serves as an almanac of compelling statistics on chronic diseases that disproportionately impact older Americans including osteoporosis, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, vision loss, neurological disease, and more. While much of this information is buried in dense reports and diverse technical studies, The Silver Book® extracts key findings and provides essential information in a single, easy-to-use, well-referenced resource.
All sources are cited so that users may integrate them into presentations and work, and return to the original sources for additional information. All data is available on-line at www.silverbook.org, where it’s easily searchable and frequently updated.

Since its launch, The Silver Book® and it’s wealth of facts have grown exponentially. In order to respond to this growth, and to offer a more sophisticated user experience, the Alliance for Aging Research undertook an effort to create a site that could not only hold such data, but also make it easily and efficiently available to all users. We are very excited to offer a site that is simple to navigate and includes advanced search features within a more streamlined design. Users can search/sort by disease, topic, reference, date, and more−and can easily link to the original resource and download the statistics they need. All for free!
