Today Is World Thrombosis Day

Today is World Thrombosis Day. Thrombosis occurs when abnormal, life-threatening blood clots form in the artery or vein. When a blood clot develops within a deep vein in the body, it is known as deep vein thrombosis or DVT. It can affect people of any age, but the risk of DVT increases with age. Forty percent of DVTs develop into a potentially deadly pulmonary embolism (PE). These two conditions collectively are known as venous thromboembolism, or VTE.

We are raising awareness about thrombosis today. One way you can learn about it is to join a World Thrombosis Day Twitter chat today at 12 p.m. EST. You can follow it using #ClotChat.

Also, please watch the video above to learn about the dangers of DVT, how you can spot the signs, and take action. The video is also available in Spanish. For more resources, go here.
