This week is National Poison Prevention Week! When many think of poison, they associate with hazardous materials. However, common over-the-counter medications that are used by millions of people to relieve minor aches and pains can be also harmful.

A new study in the European Heart Journal – Cardiovascular Pharmacotherapy found that common pain medication ingredients in nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen and naproxen may be linked to a higher risk of cardiovascular problems.

This study’s findings highlight how important it is to understand that OTC pain medications should be used correctly and with caution. When used improperly, the medications can result in serious injury or even death.

During NPPW, we encourage you to learn how you can keep you and your family safe. The American Association of Poison Centers (AAPCC) have a new online tool triage tool that offers immediate access to poisoning information and treatment advice.

The video below shows the importance of properly storing medications away from children and how to prevent misuse.
