Almost 40 percent of medications that are sold end up unused. Expired or damaged medications should never be taken because they may no longer be effective and can even be harmful. And unused medications present dangers to children who might get into them and to those who might abuse them. Medications that are improperly disposed of may also potentially harm the environment. Proper disposal of medications can be done easily and helps reduce these dangers.
This film offers consumers a simple step-by-step guide on how to safely dispose of their over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription medications.

The Alliance has launched a campaign during National Poison Prevention Week from March 20 through 26 to raise awareness about medication safety. It is highlighted by a Twitter chat on Wednesday, March 23, at 1 p.m. ET on how to safely choose, take, store, and dispose of medications in partnership with the Acetaminophen Awareness Coalition, the American Association of Poison Control Centers, the CHPA Educational Foundation, and the National Council on Patient Information and Education.
